Permit me to respectfully share a different experience.
My children are being taught common core math and I really like it. Now, improperly taught it would be a real disaster. Yet, of course, improperly taught any math curriculum is a real disaster. But properly taught I really like common core.
A friend with children at the same school made an observation: part of the frustration with common core math is that parents didn't learn common core and thus sometimes struggle to help their children when asked a question. But, my friend continued, that doesn't make common core bad in and of itself. And if you review their work regularly (as do he and I) then you will probably understand it and, at least for us, come to like it. (In a school where it is taught well.)
The other facet from my perspective is that I am constantly reminded that many adults never learned math properly with the "old" system. (To be clear some certainly did.) So it's not like we had a perfect teaching method before and have replaced it with something imperfect. We had something imperfect and there is an attempt to replace it with something better though also imperfect.
As for Common Core in other subjects, so far I've not observed a difference worth noting. But again, that may vary by school since schools didn't universally teach other subjects in the same way in the past.
As for states rights; and should the feds dictate standards, etc. Totally different subject. I'll skip that today.

Today's Featured Article - When Push Comes to Shove - by Dave Patterson. When I was a “kid” (still am to a deree) about two I guess, my parents couldn’t find me one day. They were horrified (we lived by the railroad), my mother thought the worst: "He’s been run over by a train, he’s gone forever!" Where did they find me? Perched up on the seat of the tractor. I’d probably plowed about 3000 acres (in my head anyway) by the time they found me. This is where my love for tractors started and has only gotten worse in my tender 50 yrs on this “green planet”. I’m par
