My soil is heavy black clay that can't be worked unless moisture is just right. I like to chop everthing up and leave ground in tall beds over winter. If it's raining alot at planting time tops can be knocked off to plant on beds where dirt is dryer. If ground can be worked about 30 days before planting I bust beds into middles. When I had sandy soil I usually planted a winter cover crop and did all plowing in spring.
