Sounds like it's time to remove and service the injection pump. Remove the two screw timing cover on the housing side and see if there are what looks like coffee grounds inside, that's a sign the retainer ring is failing inside. The bits then plug the return side causing the pump to shut down. Hope it has not sheared the retainer pins, locking the rotor and breaking the drive shaft. That's what happens when the return ball is knocked out and pump is used thinking all is well. If no bits are found the pump can still have metering valve, or plungers stuck inside also.
