Paul, The Case tractor that you remember was no larger than an 830. The Case-O-Matic trans was not offered in 9/1030 tractors. I sure wish it was!!! Any ways, those tractors had a torque converter splined to the engine flywheel and had a hydraulic clutch pack to lock up the converter. The lever on the dash manually controled the lockup in the converter. The tractor always started moveing in converter drive when you released the inching pedal, and once you were moveing by throttleing up you would shift the dash lever to Direct Drive. When the motor drew down from a heavy load, you would move the lever to Converter drive to pull the load through. The converter multiplied the torque to the wheels by 3.14 before it would stall. It was a great system, which became the norm in construction equipment less the direct drive lockup. Loren.
