Eldon: The MFWD axles on the IH 86 series is an Elwood axle/kit. I think it was factory installed???? At least it was an "allied" equipment type of deal. The Elwood axles will fit the large frame IH tractors from the 06 series clear to the 86 series. Although IH just sold it on the 86 series. The 06 series came with a Coleman MFWD axle and I an mot sure it will fit the newer tractors????
The first true IH MFWD axle was on the 50/52/54 88 series tractors.
As for how rare??? There are not real common but I do not think they are that rare. I know of several right around me, including a IH 86 Hydro with an Elwood mfwd. That is a kind of rare tractor. It was sold new with the MFWD and no three point. A local grain handling company bought it to move rail cars with. It had a frame with the rail car couplers on it front and back.
