I rely mostly on reward with as little punishment as possible. To demonstrate how I reward in circumstances that some people punish. Useing an e-collar to break car and trash chasing. When dog starts chasing I administer a mild annoying but not painful stimilation (level of stimulation varies from dog to dog). When he quits chasing he's rewarded because stimulation stops. The dog come's to believe he is turning off the stimulation by his action. Know each dog's favorite game or treat for use as reward. To track wounded deer, drag a fresh hide(pieces can be frozen for later use.) When dog finds it throw the ball, praise him or give snack. It's a good idea to wean from treat or game and use praise if possible but many dogs respond so well to them it's wothwhile carrying treats or ball from now on. As time go's by inrease difficulty by going through a herd of livestock, cross stream, increase time between making drag and putting him on trail, taking another dog along as detraction and so on. Once trained tune him up now and then year round. Try to vary how drag is pulled by useing different people,4 wheeler, horse or tractor, otherwise he may be learning to track you. Here's a twist on training. I rewarded a pointer pup by feeding him heads off quail he reteived and he learned that quail which had been handled were his to eat.
