One neighbor has a CaseIH machine with fluted, only slightly concave discs. He calls it vertical tillage. It chops, but hardly moves any soil. He goes over the ground several times and finally gets the seedbed he wants. His stand is nice, but with the floods we've been getting his erosion is terrible. Down 2 or 3 inches, or however much soil he chews up, it's like concrete. Water won't penetrate at all.
Neighbor on the other side has a Great Plains vertical tillage tool, (I call it a disc) with fairly closely spaced, fairly flat discs. I say the discs are styled about like they were 50 years ago.
The best thing you can do with the soil right here is to rip it up, let the weather work on it, and just smooth it out in one trip before you plant.
