Hi Have you turned the motor over by hand with the starter out so you can see all the teeth on the ring gear. Maybe the starter stuck in to take all the teeth off seen it with a versatile swather with a ford motor. The ring on that was pretty chewed in spots. Maybe thats binding it tight.
The other thing I saw on a tractor we owned was a bearing on the crank picked up slightly. The first thought on that was battery/wires and starter but everything tested good. the starter guy suggested tight bearing on crank, we turned it by hand with a big socket and you could feel it was tight when we clued in. That was the same as yours would spin over but not fast enough, but it would fire up in 6ft if it was towed, no oil gauge but the light went out when it ran. I know those motors will spin bearings and chuck rods, the shop I worked in had one and we put a 4 cyl ford gas in it as there was very few used diesels around for it at a sensible price 13 years ago in Canada. Check absolutely everything simple first, I'd hate for you to tear that motor apart and find it wasn't that you'd hate me to after as well !!!!!!. Regards Robert
