If everything is okay in the transmission you should be able to move the shift gates in and out of gear with a small prybar or a big screwdriver just like the gear shift lever would. See if they all move okay. If they do, line them up so that all gears are in neutral. If one doesn't move, odds are the transaxle is going to have to come apart. Just a thought, but is the neutral safety switch hanging up? Thats kind of a hokey design. Since you have the shifter out, see if you can move the little fork that sits around the gearshift that depresses the neutral switch. Best of luck to you. Also might want to try the lawnmower forum back on the main page. I believe Jacobsen used a peerless transaxle similar to some other brands.
