I asked a question in the AC section about the Allis Chalmers WD45 jumping out of gear when going down a hill - but thought I'd broaden the question to Tractor Talk.
Of the tractors made, say prior to 1980, any particular models that over time have a tendency to jump out of gear?
We have hills and I have concerns about buying, as an example, a WD45 and turning one of my kids loose driving down (moderate) hills with a baler, haybine or trailer attached and the tractor popping out of gear on them.
On the reverse side, what tractors had GREAT brakes? Our old Ford 3000 would lock-up the rear wheels in a flash. My old MF50 has brakes, but not nearly as good as the Ford - but do get the job done, just not great brakes. I've never had either tractor jump out of gear.
So what tractor models have a tendency over time to jump out of gear and which old tractors just had GREAT brakes? Oliver, Farmall, Deere, others?
