I've lost a few tractors and other big items in similar ways. In fact, I've now come to expect it.
Guess you can't celebrate until it's home sitting in your own driveway. Just too many people in the world that don't have any sense of honor or fair play.
Frustrating, but at least he had SOMEWHAT of an excuse. If there was truly some miscommunication in the family, it's unfortunate but I guess it's not right to say "hey too bad for you" and try to hold him to the agreement. Sounds like a stupid mistake.
I've been in similar situations only to have the seller surprise me with "oh, another guy stopped by bought it".
I was actually "the other guy" once - I had no idea. Buying my truck. I showed up with a friend, did the whole transaction, wrote up a bill of sale, winched it onto our trailer (it wasn't running).
Just as we're saying our thank you and goodbyes - two other guys pull up in a tow truck with very puzzled looks on their faces saying "uhhh what's going on?" I thought they were friends of the seller. He went over and talked with them, got a little heated and they burned out of there.
The seller explained to me "oh they were by earlier and said they had to go borrow a tow truck, but hey, money talks, you got here before them with the cash".
I made some comment about it, and he just laughed and said hey f em. I wanted to punch the guy. But I could tell he was the type that wouldn't ever get it.
Had those other guys stuck around, I'd have sold them the truck for what I paid for it. Just such a rotten thing to do to somebody. I felt bad for them.
