When I was a kid, our mailbox was on an intersection a quarter of mile from our driveway. There was a neighbor with an obnoxious dog across the road about halfway.
On non school days and during the summer it was my job to walk down the road and get the mail. The neighbor's dog would always run out and harass me, snap at my heels, etc. One day I thought, "I'll fix him". I found a two foot length of inch and a half pipe. Next day the dog came running out as usual and I even aggravated him a bit more. When he lunged to bite me in the ankle, I held the pipe behind my ankle and the dog chomped down on the pipe. He let out a "yipe" and headed for their house.
From then on, he'd lay by the house and watch me walk past, but he never came out again.
