Slip -in Crankshaft Bearings on Super A

There was some discussion recently about replacing the std. crankshaft bearings in a Super A with .003 under sized bearings to make up for wear and to boost oil pressure. If you want to replace the bearings without removing the crankshaft how do you measure the journal diameter with the crank still in the engine to be sure that .003 under isn't too tight. The only sure way I can think of is to install the bearings and check with plastigauge to see if the running clearance is ok. John
