The A1 had a mechanical range finder that the TC had to use to get the range and a mechanical ballistic computer. It had a IR and day light periscope plus the back up telescopic sight. And lets not forget the search light. They never actually released an A2 version. The A3 had a laser range finder and a TTS (thermal sight), electronic ballistic computer. The TTS did away with the search light. In 74 the COAX was different too. The M63 was being phased out in favor of the M219 machine gun. In 78 they gave us the M240. Both the 63 and 219 were jamomatics. I never saw one that would fire more that 3 burst before they jammed.
Besides the many other changes the M1 killed the M3 .45 sub gun. Originally the M1 was issued one M16 as a crew served weapon.
They got rid on the duce and a half during the draw down in the 90's. They had enough of the new AMGeneral 5 tons (Turbo Cummin's and Allison autos) to replace them from units that were being shut down. They kept the Ford MUTT jeep until they were replaced by the HMMV. Right before they got rid of the M151's they put at great expense ROPS on them and installed seat belts. They did the ROPS conversion on ours and 6 months later the Hummers replaced them. In the mid 80's they got rid of the M110 8" guns and replaced them with the MLRS (multiple launce rocket system). The so called new 155 is basically a worked over M109 but much improved. The 120MM mortar replaced the old 4.2" and they got rid of the 60MM. They were issuing the M249 machine gun as the squad automatic weapon. A version of the M240 has not replaced the M60 and they are currently issuing a new .50. No more head space and timing. From what I'm told the crew served M16 has given way to each crew member on a tank having an M4 carbine mostly because of the post 9/11 wars. Oh and I forgot the medium trucks they bought. 8X8 with 2 steering axles and the cargo model has a crane. They also have roll off ones so a driver can pull into a staging area, roll off a load of ammo and go back for another load. That's now been replaced too.

Today's Featured Article - Listening to Your Tractor - by Curtis Von Fange. Years ago there was a TV show about a talking car. Unless you are from another planet, physically or otherwise, I don’t think our internal combustion buddies will talk and tell us their problems. But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
