There are two kinds of limp mod on a duramax- engine limp and transmission limp.
engine limp- truck usually runs and shift, but wont rev above 2000 rpms, on the newer trucks is will say "engine power reduced" but im not sure on the 2001 if the cluster said that.
trans limp- usually leaves you stuck in only 3rd gear.
a code scanner would be your friend. if it is truly in limp mode, you should be able to pull a code. any PO700 code would be trans related.
being you already know it wont rev, then good chance its fuel related.
also, the 2001-2002 trucks are a bot of an oddball. a lot of the wiring, and a few other things, are specific to those years.
I would also want to know how old the injectors are. the 2001-2004 duramax trucks are know for eating injectors. at 200k miles that truck may likely be on its 3rd or 4th set. a replacement set of injectors is a very costly repair.
check the oil, if its overfilled it probably has diesel in the oil, which means injector problems.
that price is ok if the injectors are good. a set of injectors is 2000 if you can do the job yourself, easily double that if paying a shop
I drive a highly modified duramax everyday so feel free to ask anymore questions

The advice is timeless... so although it isn't necessarily antique tractor related, it will be prominently displayed in our archives to honor those who have the courage to ask and those who have the courage to respond in an honest, positive manner.
