: Began to lose power and in checking the plugs found the front plug in the engine was mashed flat (no gap in the electrode) apparently by the cylinder head. Could this be bearing problems or carbon buildup on top of the piston? The engine continues to run on three cylinders and sounds ok except it has a slight puffing noise from the exhaust. Sure would appreciate some help in diagnosing this problem. I beleive that a bearing problem would be noticed with a constant knock so I don't beleive that would be the problem. A buildup of cabon might be possible but should be seen by possibly using a mirror and a flashlight. But to me what may be most likely is the sparkplug may be missing the compression seal which should appear to be a type of washer on the sparkplug. Without this washer the sparkplug is lowered to close to the piston and is allowed to be struck by the piston closing the gap of the sparkplug. Another possibility is the wrong sparkplug is being used with to long of a threaded portion of the plug but I think that the other plugs would be having a problem as well so I don't think that would be the problem either but you might check it out and make sure that they all the same plug number. Good Luck Charles.
