Don't remember what year yours is... But the older ones, the instrument panel was held in by a few screws, just tip it forward enough to reach behind and remove the lamp holders. May have to unclip the speedometer cable to get enough slack, and be careful not to kink the oil pressure line.
The instrument lamps are on a separate fuse, and that fuse is fed from the tail light circuit, so no dash lights was an indication of no tail lights. Also the dash lights are dimmable through turning the head light switch. Sometimes the rheostat gets dirty, turning it a few times may get them working.
