I like to use cost averaging to decide what to buy. The cost of 35 year shingles vs the cost of a 50 year metal roof? I also use probability, insurance will replace my shingles every 15-20 years, hail.
Some are fans of heat pumps and think they will pay for themselves. If you factor in maintenance, life expectancy, your climate, total investment, you may do better to invest in the stock market.
