When I started as a deputy sheriff here in central Washington we would routinely pick up road kill deer and elk as long as we had a timeline on when it was killed, for food for prisoners. Later there were problems where someone in another jail got sick and was attributed to bad meat so we stopped doing that. Also we no longer had a butcher shop to process it. I think the game department still turns over illegal kills to missions. A person convicted of an illegal kill is charged for the cost of the animal according to game department. Guns are seized and generally at the end of proceedings a hunter can buy his rifle back from game dept at appraised fee.
