Water wash is a function of allowing Distilled Water and a DETERGENT MIXED (A RATIO of DETERGENT, WATER and at times ALCOHOL )to enter the intake of the GAS GENERATOR. This WATER WASH on some GAS GENERATORS MAY be performed at MIN SPEED (Gas Generator is running with combustion in the Baskets/Annular Combustion section) or on a NON FIRED DRY CRANK (Gas Generator COMBUSTION SECTION and POWER TURBINE section are typically below 100 deg F) Located on the CONTROL PANELS of the General Electric LM1500/LM2500 and the Rolls Royce SPEY Gas Generators there is typically a SELECTOR MODE on the HMI (HUMAN MACHINE INTERPHASE) in the Control Room, and sometimes on a SLAVE HMI in the COMPRESSOR ROOM. If the GAS GENERATOR is at STATIC (NOT OPERATING) someone shall place a specific amount of WATER WASH SOLUTION (as per MANUFACTURES SPECS) into a PRESSURE VESSEL that is connected to the INTAKE /BELL MOUTH of the Gas Generator. Then air is added to the above pressure Vessel regulated at a set PSI,eg, 45 psi on a GENERAL ELECTRIC LM2500 (25000 HP Gas Generator LM Designates LAND and MARINE application). At the HMI a DRY or NON FIRED WATER WASH is Selected/Initiated. At some point after all parameters are meet in the start sequence the GAS GENERATOR shall stat to ROTATE /MOTOR on the STARTER.Once the GAS GENERATOR reaches the pre set RPM in the sequence an electric solenoid vale is triggered open, allowing the WATER WASH SOLUTION sprayed into the inlet of the GAS GENERATOR. The velocity of the air entering the Gas Generators Plenum assists the WATER WASH SOLUTION to travel through the Compressor Section and into the Power Turbine Section cleaning foreign material off the ROTATING BLADES/FOILS as well as the stationary diffusor section. A water wash is performed usually to maintain an efficient running ratio of air/fuel and to obtain MAX HP for the RPM that the GAS GENERATOR is operating at(RPMS). CDP is "COMPRESSOR DISCHARGE PRESSURE". CDP is the PSI of COMPRESSED AIR that the COLD SECTION of the GAS GENERATOR (COMPRESSOR SECTION) in PSI is supplying to the COMBUSTION SECTION. E.G. A Rolls Royce SPEY at (15,000 HP) 12000 RPM on the Compressor SECTION at MAX efficiency should supply 200 PSI + at the REAR of the COMPRESSOR section to be forced into the COMBUSTORS. Usually the NON FIRED WATER wash is programed to RAMP the GAS GENERATOR (GE LM2500) up on the starter typically for 3>4 MINUTES. Then the GAS GENERATOR receives a signal and the STARTER shuts down. Usually there can be several of these NON FIRED WATER WASHES in series performed until the internal components appear to be clean. Once the water WASH is completed with he CLEANING SOLUTION there is typically several NON FIRED CRANKS performed with ONLY DISTILLED WATER to be injected into the PLENUM/BELL MOUTH. ON some GAS GENERATORS a FIRED WATER WASH is allowed. Usually the GAS GENERATOR is ramped down to MIN speed. At that point CLEANING SOLUTION is allowed to enter the INLET of the GAS GENERATOR (ROLLS ROYCE SPEY) through a FIBRE GLASS RING around the OUTSIDE of the PLENUM that has ORIFICES to allow the WATER WASH SOLUTION to be sprayed into the INTAKE of the GAS GENERATOR. YES there can be a LOT of WATER WASH SOLUTION leaking from various points on the GAS GENERATOR. OFTEN there are SPECIFIC LINES to be removed and CAPED OFF PRIOR to a NON FIRED WATER WASH! NOTE: After a NON FIRED WATER WASH you SHOULD/MUST allways START the GAS GENERATOR and place on line under load to DRY the intrrnal SECTION of the GAS GENERATOR. 99% of the time you shall receive ALARMS on the controll board (HMI) of HIGH EGT (EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURE) as water at 212 deg F+ increases the PT section TEMPERATURE.

Today's Featured Article - Good As New - by Bill Goodwin. In the summer of 1995, my father, Russ Goodwin, and I acquired the 1945 Farmall B that my grandfather used as an overseer on a farm in Waynesboro, Georgia. After my grandfather’s death in 1955, J.P. Rollins, son of the landowner, used the tractor. In the winter 1985, while in his possession the engine block cracked and was unrepairable. He had told my father
