This may be long, but when I was in the Marine Corps, I had a reputation for popping up unexpectedly most anywhere in the country. The following was one of the better ones I pulled:
Once when I was stationed at MCAS Cherry Point, NC, a buddy of mine was being rotated to Japan. He was taking 30 days leave and his plan was to drive across country and turn his car in to a dealer in California when he got there. He planned to drive up to New York and visit his mother for a week or ten days, and then drive to Albuquerque, NM and spend some time with a girlfriend "Marcia" he had there. I knew Marcia, also. Bill and I said our "goodbyes" at Cherry Point and he left. By pure chance, a couple of days after he left, I got temporary duty orders to Sandia Base, an Army base on the outskirts of Albuquerque.
First thing I did when I got to Albuque (as they called it) was to call Marcia. We set this up. When Bill got to Albuque and called Marcia, she told him they were going out to dinner with a girlfriend of hers named Flo, and "some guy Flo was dating". She didn't give my name.
When Bill walked into Marcia's house, I was sitting on the sofa with Flo, reading the local newspaper. I looked up and casually said, "Oh Hi, Bill. How've you been?"
Bill was normally quick on the uptake, but that was one time I saw him totally dumbfounded.

Amana Colonies served as a respite where we ate a family style lunch that sustained us with more food than could reasonably fit into our ample physiques. The show at Ankeny
