: What are the potential problems of towing a pickup on a dolly (That is rear wheels rolling in neutral)? : Appreciate that help. : Jim Basic transmission design: An automatic cannot be towed with the driveshaft connected. The unit is lubricated via the input shaft. A manual transmission that uses Automatic Transmission Fluid will have an oil pump in it. You'd have to consult the factory service documentaion to determine if the pump is on the input or output shaft. If on the input shaft, you'll have to drop the driveshaft. An older truck that uses 90w in the transmission does not have an oil pump, and will lube itself well enough without dropping the driveshaft. All that said, I'd still drain the transmission, remove the driveshaft, and make sure you plug the hole in the tailshaft of the transmission to keep the dirt out.
