Pa can mimic a lot of things, but it can affect mind and body. People used to die from it and still can if it is not diagnosed. At least 2% of adults over 60 develop it.

My mother developed it when she was in her 80s. She acted almost like a vegetable and was misdiagnosed with alzheimers. It took a great doctor (he modestly called himself a country doctor) to discover this even though the big hospital doctors missed it. If left untreated too long permanent neural damage can result.

I developed it before age 60, but the pernicious anemia was not diagnosed until I was about 62. I just thought it was age. Symptoms can include:

1.shortness of breath when working (I was blowing like a horse)

2. hand held items seem 2-3 times heavier

3. sleeping too much

4. Unstable balance and gait

5. Unclear thinking or fogginess

6. speech problems

7. paresthesia

8. bleeding gums

9. memory loss or slowness of recall

10.depression
