If you are talking the old ones (no letter suffix) they are very tough, but eventually the torque converter can fail, and if it does, it can spoil 20k if you let the Deere dealer do it. There are cheaper ways to get that done, though.
The newer ones, E series on up, have a more reliable hydro setup that can run for a LONG time.
If looking at an older one, see if you can spin the wheels pushing against something. If you can, the system is pretty strong yet. Also look for wear at the center hinge, as well as all the fluids, etc.
