I bought one of the harbor freight plastic welding kits a few years ago. The heat gun went into my trash can the first day, total waste of money. I discovered that a good Weller soldering gun will create a molten puddle in most kinds of plastic. You can fuse cracks and broken pieces in many cases. I recommend blowing a shop vac exhaust into the fuel tank for a good period of time and getting rid of the vapor before attempting a repair. Some items will have a symbol to identify the type of plastic. Mcmaster sells rolls of plastic welding rod, works great when a filler is needed. If the tank seems weak and damaged in multiple spots, and salvage replacement may be better. If it just has damage in one spot, I don't see why you couldn't plastic weld it.
