Before treating any livestock animal with a chemical insecticide to kill ticks make sure there are no USDA or EPA regulations that warn against using the particular chemical on some or all animals. Some regulations require a waiting period after application before the animal is sold off or used for food.
This is just like herbicides and insecticides used on crops.
That being said ticks 1/8 inch or larger can be removed by using a strong sewing thread or 6-10 lb fine superline (one of the gelspun woven or multistranded fishing lines to form an open single knot.
Slip the small open knot around the tick at the point of attachment and constrict the knot by gently pulling both ends. Once the knot is tightened around the mouth parts keep pulling and raise the ends up in a V with a stout pull. I have never had one that did not pop right out.
This works if there are just a few ticks and the animal (pet) or can be calmed. Works on me and my cats. This keeps the gut and salivary contents of the tick from being injected into the wound. The hammer claw type and similar types may work just as well or quicker, but I can never find them when I need them.
I brainstormed this one when we were at a meeting and I found a partially engorged adult female deer tick on me at 2:00 a.m. Neither the hotel nor I had any forceps but I managed to find some thread or woven dental floss. I won't tell you where the tick was attached.
