Going back to steam engine days the belt pulley was used to transmit the power from the engine to the thresher or sawmill or any other belt powered equipment. Early gas and kerosene tractors used them as well long before the appearance of the pto shaft we use today. Belt pulleys were standard equipment on most tractors until the 60s when they were more of an option and disappeared all together in the early 70s for the most part. Here's a pic.
