I went to Milnes School, a cut field stone school having one big room (about 36 x 50) with a small coat room and entry way, still located on U.S.12 3 1/2 miles east of Jonesville, MI. It's still there and now a sort of a curio/antique shop as is the neighboring former grocery gas station. I went there from midway in the 2nd grade (1942-1943) to midway in the 6th grade(1946-1947). My parents often moved at holiday time it seemed. I started school in the North Adams k-12 school and finished school at Jonesville High Schoolin 1952. The country school was fun except for those outside privvys which were pretty cold in the wintertime, you didn't spend long there. The store next door was great, a regular community gathering place with Mobilgas Products too. I'll always remember the very tasty little loaves of bread the Kleen-Maid Bakery man used to give us just about every time we happened to catch him at noon making his weekly deliveries, usually on Monday and Thursday. I walked nearly 2 miles each way to this school all year around and pulled my sled there many times to slide on the little hill there and the hills on the road going back and forth. All in all going to country school was great! I never did get a decent bicycle until the summer after I started going to Jonesville on the bus when I earned one working for neighboring farmers.
