Local vet told my son he is the only sub-50 cow dairy farm in the county that he knows of. Not very many 70-100 cow farms left, either. There are a lot of deteriorating farm buildings around here, too. It is sad to see it.
When we rebuilt part of the old barn two years ago, we retained 32 feet of the old stone walls of the original barn built in the late 1800's. When we rebuild the rest of the barn there is another laid stone wall (from the original barn) and calf sized tie stalls I built on the upper end that will be retained also. Once the rebuild is completed there will be components from all five generations within the barn. Actually it is 6 generations because Jeff's daughters both participated in the last construction and they both plan on being part of the operation. So we have a barn that has components built over period of almost 150 years, 6 generations and spanning the 19th, 20th, and 21st century. We also still have the original house built on the homestead in the 1850's period. It's in pretty tough shape, but it's still here and being used. Neat, Huh?
