Eldon, if you prepare your own tax returns, then you would be one of the persons that I was aiming at because you and others like yourself may not have been aware of it and would have been penalized for doing something deemed wrong when you weren't doing anything wrong. Regardless of whether you make out your own returns or pay someone to do them for you, AND if your employer pays for your health care, you or they will need to make out a Form 1095-C with your 2016 returns on your behalf to avoid being penalized for not having health care insurance. If it appears that you don't have health care insurance, then you will be penalized (fined) for not doing so. As I understand it, this "Affordable Health Care Act" only allows that these fines can be applied to income tax returns, meaning that if you owe a penalty (fine) and are getting a refund back, then the IRS collects this fine from your refund. If your employer covers your health care, fill out and include the Form 1095-C.
I always used to prepare my own taxes, but since my employer sometimes sends me into other states to work, and they then have taxes withheld for those states as well, and because some of those states don't have reciprocating tax agreements with my state, I then have to file state income taxes with those states, and it just got too difficult for me to do, so I pay a CPA firm $150 to prepare and file my taxes, and in return I get thou$and$ back that I didn't and wasn't because I'm not nearly as good at playing that game as they are.
