When I was a kid, there weren't any school buses in our area at all. I walked 1 mile to grade school and then drove 10 miles one-way to high school in all kinds of weather. Don't remember more than 1 or 2 days during the year when school was cancelled.
From 5th grade through the 8th grade, I had to get to school at least an hour early to build up the fire in the furnace so the building was warm for the rest of the kids. In the spring I was paid the magnificent sum of 50 cents per day for tending the coal furnace.
