Right now staying even and not losing is the best game in town. Losing 3% a year to inflation is better than 10% a month to "market forces".
Japan had a better economy than the US (not near the debt) but their aging workforce and population worked against the long term market. Their stock market peaked 25 years ago and its never come back. Today their overall market is about half where it was in 1989. Some people will claim the US is in a better position because the demographics show the US is younger overall. The problem is the "younger" people in the US are broke. Between 30 million illegals and 20 million college grads that can't find a job with crushing student loans and a national debt that threatens to end the civilized world as we know it, the long term economic situation of the US is freaking horrible compared to Japan in 1989.
