Your A probably has babbit bearings - NOT the more modern shells.

You essentially have three choices;

re-grind the crank and re-pour the bearing.

Re-grind the crank and have the rods machined to accept modern shell type bearings

or - just carefully adjust the caps by removing shims.

This may go with out saying - but especially for option 3 make sure the caps go back on exactly how you took them off.

What's very likely on that machine is the fly wheel has walked out a little on the crank shaft. The whole crank should meet a certain spec for side to side motion (moving the flywheel in and out) Try it -if you can feel it, you can probably guess if it needs to be adjusted - very common on the JDs.
