A "Blue Ox" engine retarder isn't that expensive, and they're not hard to install. You just have to remember NOT to run it for more than 5 seconds at any one time or you will slip the cylinder liners due to the back-pressure.
Years ago when I worked in the Mines in Death Valley, CA , I installed one on my MACK surface Service Truck, worked great and really saved on the air brakes. I went on vacation for two weeks and when I came back, the first thing I did when I entered the Mine compound was to check out my truck. Tilted the hood forward and pulled the dipstick - MILK SHAKE! Damn, I knew immediately what had happened, - everyone likes to hear that 'ol engine go Blub-Blub-Blub coming down a hill and they had left the retarder on too long.
