Chief, my story is almost identical to yours; same time frame. I almost opted for rotator cuff surgery last summer, but doctor said he couldn't guarantee that it would stay repaired. He warned that if I didn't repair it, I would lose some use of the arm due to atrophy of muscle tissue.
Today, no pain, but like he said, I've lost strength in my arm at shoulder level and above. For instance, I can't raise a full gallon of milk to the top shelf of the fridge--no pain, just no strength. Same with using a drill/driver above my head, or a hammer.
But what the hey, that arm served me well for 74 years; it's time I gave it a rest.
