They do make noise as the blades pass through the air. It is a whooshing noise and I relate it to waves coming ashore when you are close to the turbines. Its all about preference and I don't mind them at all. Actually its quite a soothing and rhythmic noise to me.
You typically cant hear the windmills unless you get fairly close.
I have never heard a Whompping noise or seen a bird hit one and fall to the ground. that being said I do not sit there and watch them on my free time. I have also never seen sheets of ice fly off like some say they do. I have also heard that the windmills were giving people migraines for some reason. Again, I have never gotten a headache or migraine from the turbines. I suppose some people get upset that the windmills "destroy" their skyline. I'll agree that it alters the skyline but I don't really think it ruins it.
I'm sure there were some that were unsettled when the old fashioned windmills showed up in Europe in the old days. Change can be hard sometimes.
