They are misreading the dates RTR. The 2016 looks like 2014. Obviously what you should be doing is going to the local PNC (or your bank if no PNC around) and verifying the validity of the check. If it is valid, send the remitter a note asking what it is for. If you are afraid to put it in your personal account, then open a new account for it or hold it until you have an answer.
