Eric, To replace the seals on the 9N, you will have to remove the axle bearing. Removing the bearing usually requires destroying it in the process. An alternative is to install an aftermarket axle seal. The axle retainer is counterbored deep enough that the aftermarket seal can be slipped over the axle shaft and tapped into the counterbore. The lip on the seal rides on the ground portion of the axle for the bearing retainer. There seems to be a mixed opinion about using these seals, however. Some people say the seals don't always work. I think the seal sells for about $10 and all you have to do is remove the axle, tap in the seal and reinstall the axle. If it doesn't work you will have to destroy the old bearing and press on the new bearing and retainer. I have them on my 9N and they both leak. They were on the tractor when I purchased it. I discovered that the transmission was too full of fluid. Since draining the excess fluid, I haven't used it enough to know if they are going to hold. Take the $10 chance. If they're not satisfactory, do it the right way. Most tractor parts dealers will know about those aftermarket type seals.
