Have you ever driven one of the problem cars? My daughter has always bought Jeeps. When she got her 2014 Grand Cherokee, she said she hated the shifter, to the point that she wrote a letter to the CEO and suggested they fire the engineer who came up with it. I thought that it would just take getting used to. Then she went on a trip and I used her Jeep for several weeks. Wow, what disastrous engineering! I was tempted to write a letter as well. It is totally non-intuitive and lacks tactile feedback. After 2 weeks, I still would sometimes not get it into the right gear on the first try. You've got to hunt for it if you're not lucky and hit it right off. A little while later, we were in the market for a new SUV. We have had several Grand Cherokees in the past. Guess what? We didn't even consider the Jeep and bought a Honda instead, mainly because of the shifter.
