Larry, I am a JD 440 owner. I bought mine in less than optimal condition and had worked on it all. The steering clutches are dry in that model and do not tolerate long periods of sitting. If you are having problems with them and plan on keeping and using it, nothing short of taking it down and starting over will resolve your problems. They will tell you of quick fixes and thats fine to get it on a trailer but you'll still be pulling the final drives before you are done. What I used for a ref on it was a JD 420 tractor manual. The actual parts may vary slightly in # of teeth on the bull ring, etc. but the structure and process is the same. Dennis H.
