I have been check several times. I go across the scales hauling equipment. I personally know several fellows that got caught. The fine is well into the thousands of dollars. It is based on the fuel capacity of the vehicle.
One local contractor got caught with farm fuel in his semi after an accident. They checked all of his equipment and he was fined tens of thousands of dollars for have the wrong fuel in about all of it. Between the accident cost and the fuel tax/fines he went out of business.
