I use Bovan chickens. They aren't easy to get so I am trying golden comets this year as a test. The Bovan's lay about 340 extra large brown eggs a year, eat very little, and are docile. They are super efficient and only lay pullet eggs for about a week. If you have a chance to get some you should.
Like lots of other hens, they start to play out after that initial year, so I rotate in new chicks about every 14 months. There are always people looking for free year old hens on Craig's list. There's nothing wrong with them, but a molt cycle really cuts the profit margin and eggs are a slow road to riches as it is. Of course that means having two houses of layers for half the year along with a turkey house and a broiler house. This place gets fowl.
