I usually only do meat birds. Last year I got a dozen Bared Rocks to try raising a few layers. It seems to be working out pretty good and have allot of friends who want to buy the eggs. They have averaged about 8-9 eggs a day through the winter. I'm going to get a dozen more soon although I thought I would try some Road Island Reds. That way I can tell the old ones from new when I mix them together.
I go out to the barn to take care of my cattle anyway so its not a big deal to care for a few chickens. I grind my own feed so I just grind a small 300# batch for them which seems to last a long time. They are paying for themselves plus the benefit of having my own fresh eggs.
