I bought a running JD-420T with good tires for $1300 and used it without any repairs for about 6 years and sold it for $1500. They are a fairly powerful little tractor that are very useful on the ranch for mowing, light grading, raking, etc. Problem areas are steering worm gear, leaking rocker arms, fouled plugs, etc. There is no way I would pay any more than 750-1000 dollars unless it had new tires and perfect tin. If the engine is shot, it is likely the hydraulics, cooling, clutch, etc are in need of repair and that can be big dollars. I just bought a 1955 John Deere 60 with three point, roll-a-matic, fenders, live pto, tachometer, perfect tin and seat, power steering, working lights, average tires for $2000. Starts and drives like new and all I did was change all the fluids. Won't find many 60s in that shape and with those options for that price but they are out there, you just have to be looking and a bit lucky.

But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
