The key machine at 99% of hotels is not connected to their point of sale / reservation system. Two reasons for this 1. there is no need to have this interconnectivity. 2. It would be very expensive to retrofit older hotels to the new key cards if the system had to be compatible with the existing POS / Reservation system. If you watch them program your keys they usually have to insert their "master" key first then after they remove that card they insert your keys and program them for the correct room number and number of days. If you were to try and overstay (from your departure date given at check-in) you will find your key card no longer works even if you are still paying for the room. If it was tied to their POS /Reservation system you would never have the need to get the card reprogrammed as the system would know you extended your stay. I believe the confusion came about years ago when it was discussed that since the cards magnetic strips were exactly like a credit card magnetic strip, the cards could be programmed with credit card information and used in stores. That was one of the reasons they ask to see the card when you are making a purchase. There is no need to destroy the key cards from the hotel in fact if you don't return the card you are stealing and by destroying the card you are technically destroying evidence of that theft which is also against the law. If you are concerned about the information on the card you could carry a strong magnet or a bulk tape eraser to clear the data, it is just a short segment of recording tape after all. Then give them back to the hotel erased believe me they would rather have them back erased than not at all. While not expensive they do add up.

But alas, my carb foiled me again, it would fire a second then flood out. After numerous dead ends for a replacement carb, I went to work fixing mine.I soldered new floats on the float arm, they came from an old motorcycle carb, replaced the packing on the throttle shaft with o-rings, cut new ga
