Lillie, Using a front loader on a tractor without power steering is very difficult to say the least. If the tractor operator doesn't have the physique like a wieght lifter the tractor can only be steered when it is moving and with much effort. If you haven't purchased the tractor yet, you may want to reconsider and re-evaluate the need. I would guess that if the loader is to be used primarily for cleaning stalls, a compact tractor or skid loader (bobcat) may be a good choice. If you have other needs around the farm, then a tractor with a front loader will be a better choice. As far as the front wheel drive is concerned. Using a front loader with front wheel drive is very convenient. Front wheel drive tractors are not cheap and plentiful as rear wheel drive tractors are. If you plan dictates that you use a rear wheel drive, then the rear of the tractor will have to be heavily ballasted for adequate traction - it's a must with a loader. When I do loader work, I use my 6' bush hog as ballast and if more is needed I load the bush hog with cement blocks. Recently I built a fork lift for my 3 point hitch and when I do loader work I connect the fork lift and I keep a skid of scrap steel to which I just back up to lift it up and I'm on my way. Post again if you need more info.
