Here in my part of Iowa we plant for a bumper crop every time. Sometimes we get it, sometimes we don't but our optimal planting window of time is fairly narrow and if that seed is planted after the window closes the chance for a good crop drops way down. We have pretty much the same expense in the crop whether we plant within the window or after the window has closed and a lower yield means less money in the bank to pay the expenses.
Come to think of it, the northern row crop farmers are trying to beat the fall frost but the southern farmers are trying to beat the summer heat. Quite a difference!
