i grew up in a farm house that had both well water and a cistern for soft water. cistern was hooked to the rain gutters. wash water, bath and laundry was cistern water, never had a problem. drinking water was from the well. in a lot of the Caribbean islands, they collect rainwater for drinking water as there is no fresh water on the islands. some have de-salinators, but they are spendy to run.
