Can you be more specific about how the top link was difficult to connect? It should be easy: Pin the top link at one end, adjust length until the holes line up on the other end, slide pin in. After that you shorten/lengthen the top link to achieve the proper angle for the implement at its working height.
If you are fighting that at all you are doing something wrong, or have the wrong top link.
Not being able to lift sounds more like a hydraulic or pressure problem than a geometry issue, unless things are VERY off. If the lower arms and top link are anywhere near parallel, the tractor should be able to lift the mower. It might hang tail low, but you can fix that by shortening the top link.
