Working ground will produce a better crop than no-till, IF, you get the moisture to get the weeds up to kill, plus enough moisture to get the crop up. Every time you work the ground, you loose moisture which is the big killer here in Central KS.
My Brother and I started no-tilling (chemical tilling) our ground for both spring and fall crops because of the moisture it saved about 9 years ago. The dollars spent on wear parts for tillage eqt dropped to almost none. Wear and tear on tractors was lessened, and we were able to get rid of big tractors and just keep 140hp size tractors and smaller tillage eqt to farm with. No-till also leaves "trash" in the fields which, again, in Central Ks can make the difference of all your ground blowing to another county.
On the other hand, I would usually host a plow day every year and I promise you that if we got a little rain afterwards, the plowed ground (wheat) would always out perform the no till ground.
The kicker to the no-till is that the last couple of years we farmed (quit farming last year) the weeds were getting more and more resistant to the chemical which caused for more sprays at more dollars.
My suggestion is that if you have the time, and the moisture, go conventional farming and do a good job. Just my 2 cents. Good luck - Bob
